Overview:
The Girls Fight Back program is a 90-minute, interactive seminar which serves as a great introduction to preventing and fighting back against violence. Erin's unique presentation approach combines cutting-edge safety training, empowerment and simple techniqes that are easy to remember. The program is delivered in a comedic fashion, using a practical and down-to-earth approach to safety.
What kinds of crowds is the seminar suitable for?
The
GFB program works perfectly for middle schools, high schools, colleges and the general public. We recommend an age minimum of 12 years old, because violence and sexual assault are openly discussed. There is no age maximum, as we believe you are never too old to defend yourself! All program content is modified for
appropriateness to the age group, which is discussed with the event organizer in advance. The GFB program is especially effective with
large crowds, so auditoriums or ballrooms work best.
What topics are covered?
The
program begins with GFB Founder, Erin Weed, sharing the story of Shannon McNamara’s
life and murder. This tragic event ultimately inspired Girls Fight Back. She then
teaches attendees about the value of intuition and how to reduce the risk
of being a target by being a “bad victim.” Our GFB 3-Step formula for
effective self defense is explained, and then comes the fun part! The women are then taught self-defense techniques while standing up,
on the ground (if space is available) and finally improvised weapons that most women have in
their purse or backpack. We discuss violent situations that may be
committed by either someone they know or a complete stranger. The GFB program is fully interactive but
teaches no-contact self-defense. Each attendee has an “imaginary
mugger” and tries out the moves in the air, as opposed to striking pads
or mock assailants. (This allows us to give the basics, but still
present to large crowds.) We encourage all attendees to learn more by taking a self-defense class after seeing the GFB seminar.
How much does it cost and how do I book a date?
The
fee depends on the date you request and your geographic area, among
other things. We do offer discounts for anyone who books a private seminar while
Erin is already in your state. (See Calendar
for discounted dates.) The first step is to contact us. We will send you an info packet you via e-mail, which will provide
program fees and date availability. Once we figure out a
date that works for everyone, we will send you a simple contract. Once the contract is signed and returned to us, the date is officially yours. Next we will send you a simple Event Planning Guide, in addition to
mailing you FREE, professionally designed 11x17 posters, GFB books and t-shirts
to publicize the event. We try to make the entire booking and planning process as simple as possible.
What if we cannot secure a date, or the seminar is out of our budget?
Coming in Fall 2008, we are beginning to license the full-length DVD of
Erin Weed giving the Girls Fight Back seminar. Licensing agreements
are for one year, and also will include teaching or discussion
materials including worksheets, discussion questions, exercises and a
teacher guide. Contact us for more information.
Are other programs available besides Girls Fight Back?
Yes. Erin Weed travels the nation giving several different programs all in
relation to personal safety, violence prevention and safe spring break. To learn more,
